Hi, Kate. That's true. You can't "extend" a visa. You can, however, apply for a residence card (carte de sejour) in France. Or, you could return to the U.S. and apply for another visa. The French consulate of Washington DC spells out pretty clearly here what to do if you want to stay longer. Bonne chance.

I’m an American living in Paris on a visa de long séjour. I’ve been here for six months, and my visa expires in two months. I have the means to stay six more months and just returned from the prefecture where a woman at the information desk turned me away, saying it was impossible to extend. Is this true? Do I need to apply for an extension at a French consulate in the U.S.? Your advice is very much appreciated.
